Schwierige Bilder—The dissolution of original and reproduction

The large-scale series of paintings revolves around the process of image creation. The Schwierige Bilder [Difficult Paintings] series, the subject of this publication, consists of sprawling diptychs with canvases of varying lengths that bring photographic reproductions and painterly gestures into symbiotic form. On one wing of the diptych begins the development of the non-representational painting. It is photographed, digitally processed and finally printed on the second wing. In the process, parts of the picture were doubled and in turn other details were superimposed. Subsequently, parts are painted over on both elements of the painting and provided with new painterly gestures. What emerges is a palimpsest in which different times intertwine on the canvas.

The catalog accompanying the exhibition in the new rooms of the Wemhöner Collection, which are still being renovated, provides the first comprehensive insight into this complex painterly oeuvre. With an introduction by curator Philipp Bollmann and texts by Larissa Kikol, Oliver Koerner von Gustorf, and Travis Jeppesen.
